What was the Ridolfi Plot?

A

Ridolfi was an Italian banker. Mary Queen of Scots sent letters to Ridolfi to carry messages to the Duke of Alva in Netherlands, the Pope and the King of Spain.
Mary then asked the Duke of Norfolk to help her restore Catholicism in England.

What happened in the Ridolfi plot?

A

Ridolfi met with Spain to convince them to invade England. Alva (commander of Spanish troops) was not eager on the plan, and wrote to the King of Spain urging not to invade England unless Elizabeth had already been overthrown.

A

Elizabeth questioned the Duke of Norfolk’s servants, and the plan was revealed. Elizabeth discovered the plot before it could get going. It also did not receive any domestic support in England

A

Although there was some support for the bill within the House, it did not receive the same support from higher authority. Privy Council called for Strickland to answer accusations. He was barred from the house but returned after outcry from MPs.
