King Francis II claimed that Elizabeth was illegitimate and his wife, Mary, Queen of Scots was to be Queen.
What was the religious divide?
It was the fact that England was split into Protestant and Catholic. Even though Elizabeth was Protestant she wanted both sides to be happy.
What was the issue of succession?
England believed that Elizabeth was illegitimate because her parents got divorced. The only way Elizabeth could secure her throne was to marry and produce an heir.

When Elizabeth came to throne her treasury was severely depleted and the number of beggars had increased.
