Q

What did Elizabeth decide to do about the marriage crisis?

A

Over her reign Elizabeth considered proposals from over 20 men, these included Phillip of Spain, Duke of Alencon, Robert Dudley, Eric of Sweden and William of Orange. Elizabeth chose not to marry, saying she was married to her country. She was free to rule without the interference of a husband or the distraction of children.

Q

What are the pros and cons of not getting married?

A

In some ways, no marriage led to stability, as the Crown was not tied to any European royal families. However, Elizabeth’s refusal to marry meant uncertainty over the succession but, eventually, she named James VI of Scotland, ending the Tudor dynasty.

Q

Who was Mary Queen of Scots and why was she seen as a threat?

A

Mary was a cousin of Elizabeth I and a Catholic. She was seen as a threat to Elizabeth’s reign because some of the Catholics from Mary I’s reign saw her as the rightful heir to the throne. She was also seen as a threat because she had links to both France (her 1st Husband) and Scotland. She was involved in the Babbington Plot, a Catholic plot to assassinate Elizabeth and put Mary on the throne.

Mary was accused of killing her 2nd husband, Lord Danley, and fled to England looking for help. If Elizabeth helped her, Mary could become more powerful, but if Elizabeth sent Mary back, her cousin would probably be executed.
