They didn’t like Elizabeth’s political, religious and personal views, and wanted the Catholic Queen Mary on the throne instead

Why did Essex rebel?
Because he often angered the Queen. He fell out with her and lost his position in her court and privy council, so he wanted revenge on Elizabeth.

Religion, marriage, culture, her character and foreign relations.
What religion was Elizabeth and why was this sometimes a problem?
She was protestant, but her reign was flexible as she didn’t mind Catholics. However, her predecessor, Queen Mary, was a strong Catholic and burned protestants at the stake, so England was adjusting to a new religion again.

He was Elizabeth’s most important favourite, and she considered marrying him. Him and Elizabeth were childhood friends, and it was noted that she was in love with him.
Who was William and Robert Cecil?
William was Elizabeth’s chief advisor, and Robert was his son. Robert was also dominant in government.
What was the Royal Court?
It consisted of about 1000 people, and was the centre of political power. The Privy council was the main part of the court, with 12 men who were closest to the Queen.
Who was Philip II of Spain?
The King of Spain and a devout Catholic. Previously married to Mary I, and sent a proposal to Elizabeth but she declined it.
Why was being a woman a problem for Elizabeth?
Women were viewed as inferior and weak to men. They were said to be too emotional and frail.
In Elizabeth’s peak, what type of leader was she?
She was strong, confident, powerful and resistant.
Who were Elizabeth’s parents?
Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.
Why was Elizabeth careful on the subject of religion?
She knew she needed the public’s support, so she couldn’t anger either religion like her sister did, as she was already at a disadvantage as she was a woman.
