What was the ridolfi plot ?

A

Ridolfi was a spy for the pope
He plotted to murder Elizabeth and replace her with Mary Queen of Scots
The plot was to have Mary marry Thomas Howard the Duke of Norfolk
Ridolf left England to discuss the plot with the pope and King Philip the second
There were 10,000 men ready to overthrow Elizabeth
The plot was discovered when ridolfi was away, so he never returned to England. Thomas Howard was executed as there were letters proving his guilt
Elizabeth didn’t have Mary Queen of Scots executed

What was the significance of the ridolfi plot ?

A

Spain was a clear threat to England, so Elizabeth was determined to have better relations with the France
Mary Queen was a symbol of hope for other plotters
Catholic priests were sent to England to keep Catholicism alive
Some Catholics hid priests in priest holes
Caught priests would be executed
Recusants would be fined £20 which is enough to bankrupt them
Recusants were dedicated Catholics

What was the Throckmorton plot ?

A

Mary’s cousin was the French Duke and would invade and overthrow Elizabeth
Phillip, the second of Spain, would provide finances, and the pope supported the plot
The plot was named on the person delivering messages to Mary and the Duke
Elizabeth’s secretary of state discovered the plot aand and has Throckmorton was arrested and executed

Why was the Throckmorton significant?

A

Was extremely clear that Mary Queen of Scots and Phillip the second were a clear threat to Elizabeth
A list of Catholic sympathisers was found at Throckmortons House helping, and Elizabeth started to believe that Catholics were a threat to England
Life got tougher for Catholics as Elizabeth passed laws punishing people to death for hiding priests

What was the Babington plot ?

A

This plot was the same as the Throckmorton plot
Again, the pope and the king of Spain supported the plot
Anthony Babington was the one delivering messages to Mary Queen of Scots
Elizabeth’s spy master discovered the plot, and he was executed

A

Elizabeth finally decided to put Mary on trail
She was found guilty and was executed on the 8th of February 1587
The relationship between Spain was completely broken down
England was also helping the dutch rebels fight against Spain at the time to

Why was mary Queen of Scots executed ?

A

The preservation of the queen’s safety started action against Mary as there is proof she ploted against Elizabeth
Elizabeth’s spy master found evidence of Mary’s involvement in the Babington plot agreeing to the removal of Elizabeth
She was the centre of the northern Earl’s revolt and the other plots
Mary alive face Catholics hope that she would replace Elizabeth
Parliament pressured for it to happen
She was continual hope to Catholics who could claim her legitimacy

Why was Sir Francis Walsingham important to Elizabeth

A

He has the sir Walsingham which was :
The aim was to protect Elizabeth
Walsingham used trained spies and ordinary people
He had spies in Europe and England
Used ciphers (hidden codes) to hide his plans on catching plotters
He threatened to murder Catholics priests if they didn’t give info
He used agent provocateurs to get arrests ( they encouraged others to plot so they could then arrest them )
