Elizabeth Flashcards
SUCCESS 1
Attitude of toleration present within the settlement
Ambiguity of book of common prayer
black rubric gone
open to interpretation for main dividing difference
accepted Catholics in first decade
few pp refused oath but 2nd refusal and holding mass in 1563 = death
but ACB parker instructed not to ask twice and no executions for mass took place until 1571
57 royal injections = copy of latin book too
ELIZABETH ATTITUDE PLAYED ROLE IN SUCESS
allowing Catholic’s to continue as they are meant that they were less inclined to wreak havoc
tolerance resulted in ultimate success of the maintenance of settlement
SUCCESS 2
By 1603, prominent catholic and puritan groups were marginalised
presbyterian calling for removal of system
cartwright in 70’s
field and wilcox 72 admonition
printing press destroyed, execution for them and cartwright position lost
even acb grindal replaced upon refusal r suppress prophesying
shows groups instaneoisly being suspended and taken to a halt - settlement quashed opposition and therefore sucess since only presented a short term threat
Catholicism - 400 marian bishops and rooted out at local level such as removal of decor and pilgrimages and book enforced
1570’s evidence of marginalisation since decline in catholicism
1570 excomm = 1571 treason act against not declaring E as rightful heir
many preferred social stability over anarchy
and did not want to be exposed to fines they could not afford
church = vital for village life and due to E’s popularity for moderation compared to Mary - settlement adhered to so a success
SUCCESS 3
Established through law and legislation
no alienating of sects in fear of civil war SO established prerogative rule
Act of supremacy = supreme governed and visitations
Act of uniformity = 12p if not attending church
control from a monarchy in order to reduce outbreak of anarchy
exercised powers to influence the motion of the settlement
further acts also diminished opposition
1593 acts of sedatious sectaries = execution of separatists SO loss of credibility
enforcement of royal authority and laws guaranteed settlement success
UNSUCCESSFUL 1
There were rebellions
mainly catholic motivated reblleions such as throckmorton and babington
defeated but representative of feelings towards settlement
most significant rebellion which had mqs as figurehead so threat to consolidation
northern earl rebellion in 1569
did nkt wish to make windows into men’s soul yet 800 executed
BUT.
northern rebellion was a failure
not entirely motivated by the weakness in the settlement, there is evidence that earls power had been reduced in north and excluded from jobs
the 800 executions merely shows the extent that e went to to ensure settlement stability long term
this rebellion was localised and not widespread so it was a relatively insignificant reversal of an unofficial policy
ultimately was a sucess, rebellions were not held together well and didn’t establish the interest nationally to be a threat to the success of the settlement
UNSUCCESSFUL 2
E presented with Catholic challenges
missions
douai priests
100 in 1580
little stable infrastructure- C gentry but no converting
external threats shown to have no impact
jesuits more dangerous due to fanatic nature
however
opposition deal with accordingly
1581 act - no church £20 a month, mass = 200 mark fine
1585 act - presence of priests seen as treason so 150 executed or had to leave in 40 days
lack of widespread support,
most catholics remained loyal subjects to the queen for the sake of stability and protection, satisfied wishes of vast majority
UNSUCCESSFUL 3
E could not appeal to everyone
vesterian controversey 1566
clothing offensive to p since similar to c
not conforming to a moderate settlement
BUT out of clergy who refused 37 had lost post and pressure was put on acb P to enforce unity by publishing adverts
shows determination fo queen to establish settlement and those who disagreed were rid of influential powers that could sway a larger population so this guaranteed success
although, most protestants already abided to settlement due to a division causing a question between adhering to faith or royal supremacy
most chose the latter due to expensive repercussions and genuine loyalty to the queen
therefore a sucess
