ELISA Flashcards
1
Q
What does ELISA stand for?
A
Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay
2
Q
What is ELISA used to detect?
A
Widely used laboratory technique used for detecting and quantifying the presence of specific substances such as:
1.Antigens
2.Antibodies
3.Hormones

Q
What is the process of an antigen ELISA
A
- Antibodies are stuck onto a multi well plate, and left for some time to allow it to adhere to the well.
- A sample antigen from the virus being tested for is added, they will stick to the antibodies.
- Next, a second antigen with a marker is added and a positive reaction is detected by the marker changing colour when an appropriate substrate is added.
- If there are no antigen in the sample, the second antigen will not be able to stick and there will be no colour change.

Q
What are the benefits for ELISA
A
Sensitivity and specificity
