Elimination Flashcards
1
Q
How are alkenes formed from alcohols?
A
By acid-catalysed elimination reactions (dehydration)
2
Q
What can alkenes formed through this method be used for?
A
To produce addition polymers without using monomers derived from crude oil.
3
Q
The oposite of hydration
What is another name for the formation of alkenes from alcohols?
A
The dehydration of alcohols
4
Q
What are the conditions for this elimination reaction?
A
Concentrated sulfuric acid or phosphoric acids - acting as a dehydrating agent/catalyst
Warm - under reflux
5
Q
Outline the mechanism for this elimination reaction
A
- Electron pair -> H+
- Bond (R-O) -> O (H2O should have been produced by now)
- H-C bond opposite CH2 with lone electron -> the bond between the R groups
You will have formed an alkene and a H+ ion.
