Define urinary retention
the inability to partially or completely empty the bladder
Define post void residual
the amount of urine left in the bladder after voiding and is measured either by ultrasound or straight catheterization.

a serious upper UTI

a life threatening bloodstream infection sometimes called urosepsis

irritation of the bladder

also known as CAUTI: a common hospital-acquired infection caused by the presence of an indwelling urinary catheter and the length of its use
Define urinary incontinence
the complaint of any involuntary loss of urine
Define ureterostomy
also known as ileal conduit: a permanent incontinent urinary diversion created by transplanting the ureters into a closed off part of the ileum and bringing the other end out onto the abdominal wall forming a stoma
Define nephrostomy tubes
small tubes that are tunneled through the skin into the renal pelvis to drain the renal pelvis when the ureter is obstructed
Define catheterization
the placement of a tube through the urethra into the bladder to drain urine
Define straight catheterization
also known as intermittent catheterization: a one time catheterization for bladder emptying
Define indwelling catheterization
remains in place over a period of time
Define triple lumen indwelling catheter
used for continuous bladder irrigation or when medication instillation into the bladder is necessary
