Elephant study AICE
RESULTS
Elephants gradually improved their performance over time. The mean success rate went from 39% after 10 sessions of training to 89.3% after 35 sessions of training
NAME 4 SAMPLES
5 female ASIAN elephants
Juveniles between 5-7 years
Adult ESTIMATED to be 50.
Housed in an elephant stable in Nepal.
CONCLUSION
Trained elephants can be trained to participate in a trunk wash using only SPR training techniques
APPLICATION TO EVERYDAY LIFE
Elephants can learn to engage in behaviors that help ensure their well-being. Increases safety and well-being of those working with animals
TIME?
7:30-10 and 4-7
2 strenghts
Controlled observations are easily replicated (using same schedule)
Can be tested for reliability
Validity: mahouts did not speak or give signals to the elephants, verbal cues had no meaning in English or Nepali
2 weaknesses
A small group of female elephants makes it difficult to generalize the results to a larger population.
Ethical issue, an elephant got an infection from the chain.
