What does setting mean
The time and place in which stories take place.
What is a protagonist
The main character in the story
What is the antagonist
The character who is in conflict with the protagonist
What are the foils
2 characters who are extremely different and create contrast
What are round characters
Very detailed characters and the reader is able to visualize all sides of the character
What are flat characters
One-dimensional, have little detail and a limited role
What is a dynamic character
Undergoes an important inner change for better or worse
What are stock characters
A one-dimensional character, who is recognizable to the reader
What is the plot
Order of events of a story. There must always be conflict
What does conflict mean
A struggle between two or more opposing forces
What does theme mean
The main idea of a literary work

What is the exposition
Background information is provided, describes the setting, main character, etc
What is rising action
The development of the conflict and the leading up to the climax
What is the climax
Turning point of the story, point of most intense interest
What is the falling action
Events leading to the resolution
What is the resolution
Outcome of the conflict and any loose ends are tied up
What does first person mean
The narrator may be involved with the action or an observer. “I” or “we” are used. Only the narrators viewpoint is given
What does second person mean
Trying to make the reader a character in the story by using the word “you”
What does third person mean
Telling a story as an observer. “He” or “she” or “they” are used.
