A

poetry is a form of writing that uses not only words, but also form (lines and stanzas), patterns of sound,(rhyme, repetition, and rhythm) as well as figurative language and imagery to convey a message, tell a story, or express the author’s feelings or thoughts.

the structure of poetry

A

a poem’s form is it’s appearance. Poems are divided into lines . Many poems, especially longer ones, may also be divided into the groups of lines called stanzas.

rhythm

A

rhythm is the flow of the beat in a poem. gives poetry a musical feel. can be fast or slow, depending on mood and subject or poem. you can measure rhythm in meter, by counting the beats in each line.

meter

A

the basic rhythmic structure of a verse of lines in a verse; gives a poem rhythm. consists of the number of syllables and the pattern of emphasis on those syllables. think of it as the beat.

rhyme

A

rhymes are words that end with the same sound. (hat, cat and bat rhyme.) Rhyming sounds don’t have to be spelled the same way. (cloud and allowed rhyme.)

rhyme scheme

A

when identifying a rhyme scheme the first line is always labeled with the letter A if the next line rhymes it should have the same letter. If the next line does not rhyme, you label it with the next letter in the alphabet, B. Then you continue to go through the alphabet in order with each word that doesn’t rhyme to an already labeled line.

imagery

A

imagery is the use of the words to create pictures, or images, in your mind. appeals to the five senses: smell, sight, hearing, taste, and touch. details about smells, sounds, colors, and taste create strong images. to create vivid images writers use figures of speech.
