setting
the time and place of the story
point-of-view
the narrators position in relation to the story being told.
first person point-of-view
the story is being narrated by one character at a time.
third person omniscient point-of-view
the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all the characters in the story.
third person limited point-of-view
All characters are described using pronouns, such as ‘they’ and ‘he’ and ‘she’.
mood
the emotions the reader feels when reading a piece of writing (reader-centered)
tone
the attitude the author takes with a piece of writing (writer-centered)
plot
the series of events that makes up a story
exposition
introduction to the story
rising action
leads to climax
climax
the highest point of the story
falling action
starts to wrap up the story
resolution
completes the story
flashback
moves to a scene in a movie, novel, etc. That is set in a time earlier than the main story.
flash forward
move to a scene in a movie, novel, etc. That is set in a time later than the main character.
cliffhanger
when a story ends unresolved
foreshadowing
An indication or hint of what is to come later in the story.
genre
is a book or story category defined by style, content, and sentence, diary, etc.
text structure
the way the author organize the text: chapters, section, sentence, diary, etc.
