Referent
The event that starts the conversation this could be messages, sounds, ideas, or sensations
Sender
The person who encodes and delivers the message
Receiver
Person who decodes and receives the messages
Message
Content of the communication sometimes it’s taken the wrong way because of how people perceive it so be clear and direct when communicating. Ex. Someone crossing their arms and standing could mean their annoyed or that there cold
Channels
Ways of conveying the message. Ex face-to-face (verbal channel), texting (written channel), tone and facial expressions (non-verbal channel)
Feedback
Message returned by receiver (response) nurses are usually the ones asking for clarification to make sure clear communication has happened
Interpersonal variables
Personal factors that can effect the way communication is perceived. Ex experiences, cultural backgrounds or anxiety or pain all play a role in personal factors
Environment
Setting of the interaction taking place. Ex noise, lack of privacy, discomfort
