Importance of Elements of Art
It is a fundamental building block of creating and understanding visual art
It has different elements that contributes to convey meaning and emotion as well as to its composition and aesthetic appeal
Basic building block of a visual design
Distance or path between 2 points
Series of points that extends in the opposite direction without end
It can define shape, convey movement, suggest depth
Line
Types of Line
Horizontal
Vertical
Diagonal
Curve
Primary the line of rest & quietness, relaxation contemplation
Straight line that runs parallel to the horizon or it typically runs from left to right and vice versa
Horizontal Line
Pointed, balance, forceful and dynamic
Extends from top to bottom
Vertical Line
Line of action
Degree of action is shown in the angle of diagonal
It is slants at an angle
Convey energy in composition
Diagonal Line
Show action & life and energy, they never harsh & stern
Smooth
It suggest softness, elegance and fluidity adding sense of grace and harmony to a piece of art
Curve line
It is a two dimensional design & it only have height and width which are defined by lines or boundaries
It can be geometric or organic
Shape
Types of Shape
Geometric
Organic
Refers to a two dimensional figure that can be described using mathematical formula or properties that has well defined boundaries and angle that convey precision in composition and order
Geometric Shape
Refers to a two-dimensional form that lacks the precise, regular, and geometric characteristics of geometric shapes
It is irregular, free-flowing and asymmetrical, resembling natural forms found in the environment
It convey movement, grow and life characterized by curved line, smooth
Organic Shape
Refers to the three-dimensional aspect of an object or composition
Relates closely to line in both definition and effect that comprises the shape of an object within the composition
Form is created through the use of various elements such as line, shape, color, texture, and value, which give objects a sense of depth, solidity, and presence within a space
Form
Types of Form
Geometric
Organic
Refers to three-dimensional shapes that have precise, regular, and mathematical properties.
characterized by straight lines, sharp angles, and distinct edges, giving them a sense of order, symmetry, and precision.
often used in architecture, sculpture, and design to create structures, objects, and compositions with clear, defined shapes and volumes
Geometric Form
Example of Geometric Form
Pyramid
Cube
Sphere
Cone
cylinder
3 dimensional shape that is free flowing, curvy, sinewy and not symmetrical or easily measurable or named
characterized by smooth, curved lines and contours that suggest movement, growth, and life. They lack the strict symmetry and mathematical precision of geometric forms, reflecting the irregularities and complexities found in nature.
Organic Form
Difference between Shape and Form
shape is two-dimensional and exists on a surface, while form is three-dimensional, occupying space and having volume. Shapes are typically flat and static, while forms have depth and can be viewed from multiple angles, allowing for a more immersive experience.
Crucial component of an images composition
Constitutes an additional and very important aspect of the composition of an artwork
capable of evoking emotions, conveying meaning, and creating visual impact
Color
Components of Color
Hue
Value
Intensity
Specific color pure/ traditional color spectrum consist of 7 basic color
Such as red, blue , yellow
Hue
Sometimes called Key
Relationship of black, white, and gray
Lightness and Darkness of a color
For example adding white to a red color that result to pink which becomes lighter
Value
Also called chroma/saturation
Comprises the degree of purity or vividness of a hue
Highly saturated colors appear vivid and vibrant, while desaturated colors appear muted or dull.
Intensity can be used to create focal points, draw attention, or convey emotions within a piece of art.
Intensity
Distance between/within shapes, forms, colors and lines
fundamental concept that artists use to create the illusion of depth, distance, and volume within a two-dimensional artwork.
Space
Types of Space
Positive Space
Negative space
area occupied by an object/form
area where the main action or focus of the artwork occurs.
Positive space
empty or unoccupied areas surrounding the main subjects or objects in a composition.
plays an important role in defining the shapes and forms of the positive space and contributes to the overall balance and harmony of the composition.
Negative space
Thw way something feelz and the way it looks like it feels
surface quality or tactile sensation of an artwork.
adds depth, interest, and realism to artworks, engaging the viewer’s senses and enhancing the overall visual experience.
Texture
Principle of Patterns
pattern
Contrast
Balance
Emphasis
Harmony and unity
Proportion/scale
Movement
Importance of Principle of art
fundamental guidelines that artists use to organize and arrange the elements of art within their compositions. These principles play a crucial role in creating visually appealing, balanced, and expressive artworks
Repeating unit of space/forms
Repetition of visual elements
creates visual rhythm and unity within a composition
Pattern
Part that is repeated
Motif
Difference in a work of art, light and dark, rough and smooth, curved line and straight, color
How the opposite elemets relate to each other and add emphasis
crucial role in creating visual interest, emphasizing important elements, and adding dynamism to artworks
Contrast
Distribution of the visual weight of object in a work of art, color, size and texture
Concept employs certain innate judgement
essential for a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing artwork.
Balance
directing the viewer’s attention to a particular focal point or area within a composition.
used by artists to highlight and give importance to specific elements, creating visual hierarchy and guiding the viewer’s interpretation of the artwork
Emphasis
essential principles in art that help create visually appealing and cohesive compositions.
focuses on the combination of elements to create visual balance and consistency,
emphasizes the integration of all elements to create a sense of completeness and wholeness
Harmony and Unity
Size of something compared to what next to it
Visual siz and weight of a composition and how they relate to each other
Proportion/scale
Create a sense of action or implied motion
Controlling the element in the composition
Movement
