A

What is variation?

A

A stylistic device used in Anglo-Saxon (Old English) poetry where different words or phrases are used to refer to the same person;object; or concept throughout a poem. To Maintain interest and avoid repetition while fitting the rhythmic and alliterative structure of the poetry; Uses synonyms/epithets to refer to the same entity. Especially useful in oral poetry; as it allows the poet to recite long poems without relying on repetitive phrasing.
