What is the Definition of kennings?
A figurative expression that replaces a common noun with a compound word or phrase. describes something in a more imaginative and indirect way rather than directly naming it. Kennings reflect the culture and values of the societies that used them;and they were a key feature of the oral tradition in Anglo-Saxon and Norse poetry.
What is variation?
A stylistic device used in Anglo-Saxon (Old English) poetry where different words or phrases are used to refer to the same person;object; or concept throughout a poem. To Maintain interest and avoid repetition while fitting the rhythmic and alliterative structure of the poetry; Uses synonyms/epithets to refer to the same entity. Especially useful in oral poetry; as it allows the poet to recite long poems without relying on repetitive phrasing.
