Elements of a Narrative Flashcards
Plot
series of events that make up a story
Exposition
Fancy word for introduction, you find out the setting and characters
Rising Action
Problems start to happen - it gets exciting
Turning Point (climax)
divides the story between everything being part of the problem and everything being part of the solution (also thought of as most exciting point)
Falling Action
Still has excitement, but now it’s part of solving the conflict
Resolution
Where the conflict gets solved (or at least finished)
Conflict
The problems in the story - especially the main problem
Internal Conflict
A conflict that is happening within the character. (Like being afraid and having to get over your fear)
External Conflict
A conflict that is coming from outside the character. (Like a bully that won’t leave character alone.)
Man vs Man
Two characters against each other (so it’s external)
Man vs Self
A character fighting a battle within him/herself. (So it’s internal)
Man vs Nature
A character fighting against the way of the world. (So it’s external.)
Protagonist
Main character that is the hero - the one we are supposed to root for.
Antagonist
The main enemy of the protagonist. (Jafar in Aladdin - Aladdin is the Protagonist)
Major character
A character who is central to the story, you can’t really have the story without him/her.
