memoir
a narrative composed from personal experience; it is often framed to include specific events or time periods from the author’s life.
pathos
an attempt by the author to evoke an emotional response from the audience in order to persuade them
nostalgia
a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations
stance
the author’s choice of how they situate themselves in order to present information to their audience: objective vs. subjective, approving vs. disapproving, participant vs. observer, intimate vs. distant, involved vs. detached, assured vs. questioning, etc.
tone
the author’s attitude toward their subject
point of view
this refers to the relationship between narrator and the story they are telling; first person and third person are the most common
persona
the voice chosen by the author; the role a narrator takes on in order to present themself in a particular way
objective
a presentation of information that is not influenced by personal opinions or feelings
subjective
a presentation of information that is clearly influence by personal opinions and feelings
bias
showcasing a prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another
ethos
an attempt by the author to use ethical/moral arguments and showcase their authority on a subject or use the authority of another to prove their point.
logos
an attempt by the author to use logical/factual arguments to prove their point
anecdote
a short amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person
