Elements, Mixtures and Compounds Review Flashcards
Mixture
Two or more substances combined but not bonded to each other
Element
A substance containing only one type of atom
Compound
A substance containing only one type of molecule. The molecule MUST contain 2 or more different types of atoms.
Atom
The smallest unit of an element that still maintains the properties of the element.
Molecule
Two or more atoms bonded to each other. The atoms may be the same making it an element. The atoms may be different making it a compound.
Chemical Bond
The link that holds two atoms together in a molecule. Caused by the sharing of electrons.
Pure Substance
A substance where all of the atoms are the same OR all of the molecules are the same. This includes both elements and compounds.
Oxygen gas (O2) is a mixture, compound or element?
Element
Carbon dioxide gas (CO2) is a mixture, compound or element?

Helium gas (He) is a mixture, compound or element?

Nitrogen gas (N2) is a mixture, compound or element?

Sucrose (C6H12O6) is a mixture, compound or element?
Compound
Amonia (NH3) is a mixture, compound or element?

Methane (CH4) is a mixture, compound or element?
Compound
Heterogeneous Mixture
Not well mixed. You can see the separate parts. Ex. Salad, dirt, pizza, cement.
Homogeneous Mixture
Very well mixed. You cannot see the separate parts.Ex. Milk, Salt water, Air
Solution
The most well mixed of the homogeneous mixtures. They appear clear. They consist of two parts, the solvent and the solute.
Solvent
Part of a solution. Does the dissolving.Ex. Water
Solute
Part of a solution. Gets dissolved.Ex. Salt, Sugar, Caffeine
Soluble
A property of matter. Describes something that is “able” to be dissolved.
