Elements, Compunds And Mixtures Flashcards
What is an element
Elements are materials that cannot be split up into anything simpler by chemical methods. They contain only one type of atom.
What’s a compound
A material that has two or more different elements chemically joined together
What’s a mixture
A material which has two or more substances mixed together. They are not chemically combined and so can be physically separated.
What are 5 properties of metals
hard,
conduct electricity
heat,
high density,
high lustre,
malleable,
high melting point
What does malleable mean
can be hammered into shape.
What does ductile mean
can be drawn into wires
What are properties of non metals
Brittle,
do not conduct electricity,
dull,
gas, liquid or solid at room temperature
Examples of compounds
Iron sulfide – iron and sulfur
Copper sulfate- copper, sulfur and oxygen
Examples of elements
barium
aluminium
iron
silver
