elements compounds mixtures and separating techniques Flashcards
what is a element
it is a pure substance in which all of the elements are identical it is found in the periodic table
what is a compound
it is a substance made up of the atoms of two or more elements which have been joined together the atoms are chemically bonded and difficult to separate
what is a mixture
a mixture is a substance made up of the atoms of two or more elements or compounds which have been joined together they are easy to separate
what is an atom
it is the smallest part of a substance
what is a molecule
it is two or more atoms chemically bonded the atoms can be from the same or different elements
what is a pure substance
pure substances such as compounds and elements melt and boil at well-defined fixed temperatures for example the melting point of pure water is 0 degrees, and the boiling point is 100 degrees.
what is filtration
is used to separate an insoluble solid from a pure liquid or a solution
what is evaporation
evaporation is used to separate the solid solute from the solvent in a solution
what is distillation
……. is used to separate the components of a solution
what is crystallization
……… is used to purify substances and can be combined to understand the nature of the substances crystalized
what is paper chromatography used for
……….. is used to separate colored chemicals or substances
what is simple distillation
…….. is a separation technique used to separate a solvent from a mixture
what is fractional distillation
………. is used for the purification of water and is also used to separate liquified air
