Elements, compounds, mixtures Flashcards
A substance that can not be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
element
a sample of matter, either a single element or a single compound, that has definite chemical and physical properties
pure substance
an element that is shiny and conducts heat and electricity well
metal
an element that conducts heat and electricity poorly
nonmetal
an element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals
metalloid
substance made up of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
compound
compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen found mostly in foods but can also be in synthetic goods
organic
organic compounds that are made of living things. 4 categories: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids
biochemicals
used as a source of energy and includes sugars, starches, and fiber
carbohydrates
store excess energy in the body and make up cell membranes which include fats, oils, and waxes
lipids
most abundant in your body and they regulate the chemical activities of the body and build and repair body structure
protiens
like DNA and RNA- contain genetic information and help your body build protein
nucleic acids
combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
mixture
describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout Ex: sugar water
homogeneous
describes something that does not have a uniform structure or composition throughout Ex: a handful of rocks, dirt and leaves
heterogeneous
