Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
What is an element:
A substance that contains one type of atom
What is a molecule:
More than one atom chemically bonded
What is a compound:
Two or more elements chemically bonded and they are always neutral
What is a mixture:
Two or more elements and/or compounds that are not chemically bonded
What are the four ways of separating mixtures:
Chromatography, distillation, filtration, evaporation
What does chromatography do:
Shows what colours are in a liquid on paper
What does distillation do:
Separates liquids so you have the separate liquids at the end
What does filtration do:
Separates solids from liquids
What does evaporation do:
Separates solids and solids that have dissolved in liquids
How do you separate compounds:
With a chemical reaction
What elements form positive ions:
Metals
