Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
What is an element?
Elements are materials that cannot be split up into anything simpler by chemical methods. They contain only one type of atom.
What is an atom?
An atom is the simplest particle of an element that can exist on its own.
What is a molecule?
Molecules consist of two or more atoms joined together.
Where does the periodic table split into two sections and what are they?
The periodic table splits after Al, Ge, Sb and Pe.
On the left there are the metals, on the right there are non-metals.
Are the following elements conductors or insulators?
Aluminium, Zinc, Copper, Iron, Carbon, Sulfur
Aluminium-conductor Zinc-conductor Copper-conductor Iron-conductor Carbon-conductor Sulfur-insulator
Are the following elements shiny or dull?
Copper, Zinc, Aluminium, Carbon, Sulfur
Copper-shiny Zinc-shiny Aluminium-shiny Carbon-dull Sulfur-dull
Do the following elements have high or low density?
Lead, Iron, Sulfur, Carbon
Lead-high
Iron-high
Sulfur-low
Carbon-low
Are the following elements hard or brittle?
Iron, Sulfur
Iron-hard
Sulfur-brittle
Are the following elements malleable or not malleable?
Lead, Sulfur
Lead-malleable
Sulfur-not malleable
Do the following elements have high or low melting points?
Iron, Sulfur
Iron-high (1538)
Sulfur-low (133)
Properties of metallic elements:
- good conductors of electricity
- shiny solids
- have high melting points
- malleable and ductile
- room temperature (except Mercury)
- good conductors of heat
Properties of non-metallic elements:
- poor conductors of electricity
- usually dull
- have low melting points
- can be a gas, liquid at room temperature or solid
- soft and brittle
- poor conductors of heat
What is a compound?
A compound is a material that is made up of two or more different elements that are chemically joined together.
If you have ONE metal and ONE non metal you change the ending of the ___ _____ to ___.
