Elements, compounds and mixtures Flashcards

1
Q

What are elements?

A

Elements are substances that cannot be broken down into any other substance. They are made up of only one type of atom.

Q

How do the properties of a single atom differ from the properties of a group of atoms in an element?

A

Groups of the same atom give an element its properties but a single atom does not have the same properties as its element.

Q

What is the most common element in the human body?

A

Oxygen is the most common element in the human body, comprising approximately 65.0% of body mass. Most of the oxygen present is found in the form of water.

Q

What is an atom?

A

An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist. A single atom does not have the properties of the element, which is made up of many atoms. An atom is not a solid, liquid or gas - there have to be many atoms to take on the properties of those states.

Q

Water exists as molecules. The molecules are made up of atoms of two elements, meaning that water is a compound.

How do the properties of water differ from the properties of the elements hydrogen and oxygen, from which it is made?

A

Water is a liquid at room temperature.

Hydrogen is a gas at room temperature and is highly explosive.

Oxygen is a gas at room temperature, it is colourless and odourless.

15
Q

Which has a higher boiling point, water or hydrogen?

A

Molecules in liquids are held together by forces. Those forces between molecules are stronger in liquid water than in liquid hydrogen. Therefore, it takes more energy to separate water molecules from each other than to separate hydrogen molecules from each other. So, water has a higher boiling point than hydrogen.

16
Q

What is salt?

A

Sodium chloride (NaCl).

17
Q

What are the properties of sodium, chlorine, and sodium chloride?

A

Na - shiny metal that fizzes in water
Cl - smelly, green, poisonous gas
NaCl - white, edible solid at room temperature

In salt, which is a compound, the atoms of Na and Cl are bonded together. Compounds always have different properties to the elements in them.

18
Q

What is the name of the compound formed from aluminium and oxygen?

A

Aluminium oxide

Compounds made of oxygen plus one other element have two-word names, the second word being oxide.

19
Q

What is the name of the compound formed from zinc and oxygen?

A

Zinc oxide

Compounds made of oxygen plus one other element have two-word names, the second word being oxide.

20
Q

What is the name of the compound formed from sodium and chlorine?

A

sodium chloride

21
Q

What is the name of the compound made from one carbon atom and one oxygen atom?

A

carbon monoxide

22
Q

What is the name of the compound made from one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms?

A

carbon dioxide

23
Q

What is a mixture?

A

A mixture is two or more elements mixed together, but not chemically joined (bonded).

24
Q

How do you separate a mixture?

A

Separate a mixture using filtration.

25
Q

How do you separate a solution?

A

A solution is separated by evaporation.

26
Q

What is a solution?

A

A solution is produced when a substance dissolves in water. The substance is soluble.

27
Q

What is meant by ‘insoluble’?

A

A substance that is insoluble cannot dissolve in water.

28
Q

What is a saturated solution?

A

A saturated solution contains the maximum amount/mass of a substance that will dissolve. If you added more to the water, it would not dissolve (you would have to add more water too).

29
Q

What does chromatography do?

A

Chromatography separates substances in a mixture.

30
Q

How do you separate sand from a mixture of sand and water?

A

By filtration. The sand would remain in the filter, the water would pass through.

31
Q

How do you separate salt from a solution?

A

By evaporation. The salt would remain when the water boiled/evaporated away.

32
Q

How do you separate a dye of one colour from the mixture of dyes in a felt-tip pen?

A

By chromatography. The different colours travel different distances on the chromatography paper.
