Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
What is an atomic number?
The number of protons in an atom.
What is a mass number?
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
What is a solute?
Something that is dissolved in a solvent.
What is a solvent?
Something that a solute is dissolved in.
What is a solution?
A solute plus a solvent.
What is an element?
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into smaller substances by chemical or physical methods.
What is a compound?
A compound is when two or more elements are chemically combined. They are not easily separated.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is when two or more substances are mingled together. They are easily separated.
What is complete combustion?
Fuels burn when they react with oxygen in the air. If there is plenty of oxygen, we get complete combustion.
What is the word equation for complete combustion?
Hydrocarbon (fuel) + oxygen = water + carbon dioxide.
What is incomplete combustion?
This occurs when there is a poor supply of oxygen in the air. Water is still produced, but carbon monoxide and carbon are produced instead of carbon dioxide.
What is the word equation for incomplete combustion?
Hydrocarbon (fuel) + oxygen = carbon monoxide + carbon + water.
