Elements, Atoms, And The Periodic Table Flashcards
What is an atom?
The atomic building block of matter.
What a is an element?
A type of atom
what is the periodic table?
A table of all elements that we know of. The first periodic table only had 60 elements on it and was created by Dimitri Mendeleev in 1896. Our modern periodic table has 118 elements.
What are the main groups of the periodic table?
The elements within the periodic table can be divided into 10 groups based on their properties and characteristics. They are Alkali Metals, Alkali Earth Metals, Transition Metals, Basic Metals, semi metals, Nonmetals, Halogens, Noble Gases, Lanthanide, and Actinide.
How is the periodic table organized?
It is organized into rows(called periods )and columns (Called families) based on the atomic number of each element.
What information is included on each element in the periodic table?
The elements abbreviation, full name, atomic number, and number on the periodic table.
What is the atomic number of an element?
The number of protons in an atom of that element.
Briefly explain the structure of an atom.
An atom is comprised of a nucleus, contains protons and neutrons, and outer shells contains the atoms electrons which are constantly orbiting the nucleus.
What is Bohr’s model of the atom?
Niels Bohr proposed, in 1913, what is now called the Bohr model of the atom. He suggested that electrons could only have certain classical motions:
Electrons in atoms orbit the nucleus.
The electrons can only orbit stably, without radiating, in certain orbits (called by Bohr the “stationary orbits”[5]) at a certain discrete set of distances from the nucleus. These orbits are associated with definite energies and are also called energy shells or energy levels.
Electrons can only gain and lose energy by jumping from one allowed orbit to another, absorbing or emitting electromagnetic radiation.
