Elements And Compounds Flashcards
What is an element
A substance that is made of only one type of atom. It cannot be broken down into simpler substances
Whats a compound
A compound is a substance formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded together.
Name compounds made of 2 elements
Water
Carbon dioxide
Sodium chloride
Name compounds made up of 3 elements where one of the elements is oxygen
Calcium carbonate
Glucose
State the difference between a compound and a mixture:
A compound is chemically bonded, and its components cannot be separated by physical means
A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded and can be separated by physical methods
Describe what a molecule is:
A group of two or more atoms bonded together. It can be made of the same element
I can state the 4 main gases in the air, their percentages, and their chemical formula
Nitrogen (N₂) – about 78%
Oxygen (O₂) – about 21%
Argon (Ar) – about 0.93
Carbon dioxide co2 about 0.04%
I can identify elements, compounds, and mixtures using particle diagrams:
• Elements have diagrams showing only one type of atom.
• Compounds show molecules with different types of atoms chemically bonded.
• Mixtures show more than one type of particle (atoms or molecules) that are not bonded.
