Elements And Atoms Flashcards
Element
A pure substance that can’t be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means.
Group
Elements in the same column in the periodic table, this elements have similar amounts of electrons, thus they behave similarly.
Family
Another name for a group.
Period
A row of elements. They are ordered by atomic number and have the same number of outermost shells.
Compound
A substance made of take or more elements. These elements are chemically bonded in a specific ratio.
Mixture
Two or more substances that are in the same place but ARE NOT chemically bonded.
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that keeps the characteristics of the element.
Proton
One of three parts of an atom, protons have a positive charge, a mass of 1, and are located in the nucleus, or center, of the atom itself.
Neutron
Two of three parts of an atom, neutrons have no charge, have a mass of 1, and are located in the nucleus, or center, of the atom itself.
Electron
The third of the three parts of an atom, the electron has a negative charge, has no mass, and is located outside of the nucleus, or center, of the atom itself.
Atomic Number
The number of protons in an element.
Mass Number
The mass of an element.
Element Symbol
An abbreviation of an element
Element Name
The name of an element.
Metal
A type of element on the periodic table, metals are usually solid, hard, and are good conductors of heat and electricity.
