Melody
A series of pitches forming a musical line, a tune.
Theme
A melody, usually short, that is used as the basis of a musical composition.
Chord
Usually defined as 3 or more notes sounding together.
Rhythm
The time element in music, how long or short notes are.
Meter
The arrangement of beats into larger groups, usually regular groupings of 3 or 4.
Tempo
Speed; how fast or slow.
Timbre
Sound quality, tone color.
Dynamics
How loud or soft the music is. (Forte = loud / Piano = Soft)
Key
A collection of notes centered around a pitch.
Major and Minor
The two main types of scales; though oversimplified, it can be helpful to think of them as “Happy” (Major) and “Sad” (Minor)
Tonal and Atonal
Tonal music is “in a key,” Atonal music is not.
Modulation
A change from one key to another.
Cadence
A musical “Period” or “Comma” ; the end of a musical idea.
Monophony
A single line of music.
Polyphony
More than one note sounding at a time.
