Element Information Vocabulary Flashcards
The smallest piece of an element that still represents that element.
Atom
Small area in the center of the atom that contains most of its mass and positive charge.
Nucleus
A particle with one negative charge.
Electron
An atomic particle that has one positive charge.
Proton
Neutral particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron
The number of protons in an atom.
Atomic Number
The sum of the number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
Mass Number
Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
Isotopes
The average mass of the element’s isotopes.
AVERAGE ATOMIC MASS (Relative Atomic Mass)
An area around an atomic nucleus where an electron is most likely to be located.
Electron Cloud
An atom that is no longer neutral because it has lost or gained valence electrons.
Ion
Elements that spontaneously emit radiation.
Radioactive
A process that occurs when an unstable atomic nucleus changes into another more stable nucleus by emitting radiation.
Nuclear Decay
