what does supervision mean?
supervision means directing the activity to take more control of the way the pool user behaves.
A lifeguard needs to make sure they balance the element of supervision required without having so much control that people dont enjoy their visit
what does obervation mean?
watching the activities without taking any direct action
what are some examples of early intervention?
-asking a swimmer not to hypervntilate prior to swimming underwater
- asking a swimmer to follow the direction of the lane swimming signs
-stoping a weak swimmer from moving to the deep end by crawling along a lane rope or the side of the pool
- taking immediate action if if you see a member of the public with a concerned expression on their face- find out why and act accordingly
how can lifeguards generally prevent accidents?
- following and applying the site pool safety operating procedures
Lifeguards must remain at the allocated lifeguard position unless…..
Making an intervention to prevent accidents, manage a situation, or respond to an emergency.
What does critical intervention mean?
A person’s life is in danger. The relevant EAP will be followed
What does non critical intervention mean?
An accident could happen or events could lead to something more serious.
What is the 10:20 system?
A lifeguard must supervise within 10 seconds and be close enough to get to an incident within 20 seconds.
Why should you know about the different types of sessions within a swimming pool?
so you understand that different sessions have different risk factors I require different types of supervision
what is a zone?
A zone is the area of the pool. A lifeguard is responsible for supervising
what is the lifeguard Zone visibility test (LZVT)?
It’s a test that pool operators will complete to work out the best position for lifeguards to supervise The whole zone they are responsible for
what are the two types of zones ?
- Individual
- Shared
What is scanning?
Scanning is looking around the pool constantly for a few seconds at each part of the pool and to make sure you don’t concentrate on one part of the pool for too long. You use a sweeping action by moving your head
what should you watch out for when your scanning?
- known hazards
- swimover numbers
- swimmers submerging
-anxiety or covern onpool users’ faces - swimmers trying to attract your attention
- The very young
- Inappropriate behaviour
