Electrotherapy Flashcards
What type of current is used to push meds?
Continuous DC
What type of current is best for swelling?
Pulsed DC
What type of current is best for pain control?
Pulsed AC
What type of current does TENS fall under?
Pulsed AC
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz
What is current measured in?
mA
What is the therapeutic frequency range for chronic pain?
.3-10 Hz
What is the therapeutic frequency range for acute pain?
80-150Hz
How does IFC work?
One current has 4000Hz and the other has somewhere 4001-4150Hz and the difference is the actual effect on patients (beat frequency)
Where do premodulated currents cross?
In the device
Where do IFC currents cross?
In the patient
What mode allows you to pinpoint a treatment site?
target mode
How many leads does classic IFC use?
4
How many leads does premodulated IFC use?
2
Where is the most intensity with classic IFC?
In the center of the pads or the target
Where is the most intensity with premodulated IFC?
Under the pads
What are potential adverse effects of IFC?
Skin irritation, burns, electrical shock, promotion of bleeding
What are contraindications to IFC?
Pacemakers, cardiac arrhythmias, pregnancy (IFC over the low back or pelvis), carotid bodies, electrical implants, vascular disease, osteomyelitis, infection, hemorrhage
What are precautions for IFC?
Loss of skin sensation, unable to communicate, reduced mental function or cognition, cardiac dysfunction, epilepsy, neoplasms, compromised skin, diathermy unit within 5 yards
How long do you treat an acute patient with IFC?
15-20 minutes
How long do you treat a chronic patient with IFC?
20-30 minutes
