Electrostatics 1 Flashcards
What is electrostatics?
study of static electrical charges.
What are the two types of electric charges?
Positive and negative charges.
What is the smallest unit of charge?
The charge possessed by an electron (negative) or a proton (positive).
How do electric charges interact with each other?
Like charges repel each other, and unlike charges attract each other.
How does the medium affect the magnitude of the forces between charges?
The magnitude is greatest when the medium is a vacuum.
What is the behavior of electrical charges in conductors and insulators?
Electrical charges flow easily in conductors but with difficulty through insulators.
What can induce electrical charges in a body?
The proximity of a charged body to an uncharged body
What is produced by moving electrical charges?
A magnetic field.
What is the relationship between force and distance for two charges q1 and q2 separated by distance r?
The force of attraction/repulsion (F) is proportional to q1 and q2, but inversely proportional to the square of the distance (r) between them.
What is permittivity?
The ability of a substance to store electrical energy in an electric field.
