Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance Flashcards
Electrostatic Potential Energy
Electrostatic potential energy of a charge q at a point (in the presence of field due to any charge configuration) is defined as the amount of work in bringing the charge q from infinity to that point.
Electrostatic potential
Electrostatic potential at a point in the electric field is defined as the amount of work done by an external force in bringing a unit positive charge from infinity to that point without acceleration irrespective of the path followed.
What is an equipotential surface?
Any surface over which electric potential remains constant is called an equipotential surface.
A surface with constant value of potential at all points on the surface.
What is electrostatic shielding?
Whatever be the charge and field configuration outside, any cavity in a conductor remains shielded from outside electric influence i.e. the field inside the cavity is always zero. This is known as electrostatic shielding
