Electrostatic Forces Flashcards
Electrostatic forces occur between objects which are _______.
Charged
Objects that carry the same type of charge always ______ each other, where as objects which carry different charges always ______ each other.
Repel
Attract
Coulomb found that the electrostatic force was _________ proportional to the _____ of the two charges.
Directly
Product
Electrostatic force was _______proportional to the distance between the charges ________.
Inversely
Squared
What is Coulomb’s constant?
K= 9x10^9 (N.m^2.C^-2)
What is a conductor?
Is a substance which allows charged particles to flow through with little or no resistance.
What is an insulator?
A substance that does not allow charged particles to flow through it,but will store charge on its surface.
Explain how the generator builds up charge on the dome. Assume that the dome builds up a negative charge.
Friction transfers electrons onto the rubber band. The friction occurs by the rubbing of the band against the Metal comb. This transfers negative charge onto the rubber belt, further transferring the negative charge onto the metal dome.
Explain the movement of the flame?
The flame gives off positive and negative charged particles , which cause both plates to attract. This causes the formation of a disk, which flattens the flame.
Coulomb’s Law states:
The force between two charges is directly proportional to the product of the electrostatic charges and inversely proportional to the distance between the charges squared.
