Q

What are features of induced dipoles?

A

-molecule has temporary dipole
-partial charge on this molecule exerts force on nearby molecules
-partial charge on one molecule pushes the electrons away from another molecule
-this induces a dipole on another molecule
-these temporary dipoles attract one another

Q

How can you tell whether a molecule is polar or non-polar?

A

Does it have polar bonds?
>NO: non-polar (ex. C2H4)
>YES:
Do the bonds cancel out?
>NO: polar (ex. H2O)
>YES: non-polar (ex. CCl4; the C-Cl bond is polar but the polar bonds cancel out)
