Electrons and the periodic table Flashcards
How do the properties of Electromagnetic radiation help us know what type of light is emitted?
Wavelengths(distance between peaks)determined the amount of frequency (peaks per second or how fast)energy(distance between nucleus and the electrons)
Electromagnetic Radiation
Electro magnetic radiation is energy that travels through space and is a wave like particle
How does light come into atoms (photo emission) ?
Photon is a packet of electromagnetic radiation and once it hits an electron, it bounces the electron further away from the nucleus and once it comes back it releases a certain frequency wavelength that then sends out a specific color.
Use a periodic table or an atomic symbol to count all the subatomic particles in an atom, an ion, or isotope
Example would be:
Beryllium 1s^2 2s^2
How do electrons behave (In terms of spin, energy, and movement and location)?
They have different levels of energy and are located in different orbitals
What are valence electrons?
The electrons at the highest energy level
what is Lower frequency?
Longer wave-lengths
what is Higher frequency?
Shorter wave-lengths
What is frequency?
Peaks per second
The more energy an electron has….?
The further aways it is from the nucleus
How many electrons can an orbital hold?
2 e- max
What are the different types of orbitals? what are their shapes?
s,p and d orbitals. Circle, peanut and double peanut shaped.
What is the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle?
e- move every where in an unpredictable fashion, except they are in an orbital.
What is a Photon?
a packet of electromagnetic radiation
Light comes from electrons
A three-dimensional region around a nucleus where an electron may be found is called
Orbital
what do the levels of energy mean?
The distance from the nucleus
What is the most accurate description of how white light is changing when reflected through a prism?
The different wavelengths of light are being separated by a change in speed through the prism
In a vaccum, which wave travels faster?
They are the same
The more energy an atom is given…..
The further the electron moves in relation to the nucleus of an atom.
Where does electromagnetic radiation , which includes visible light, come from?
When an atom absorbs energy, the electrons jump to a higher energy level, but can’t stay at this higher level for ever. When the electro falls back down to its ground state, a photon of electromagnetic radiation is emitted.
Can we ever know where electrons are located?
No. According to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, we can only know a probability of where an electron might be. We can not know for certain. Instead, they are likely in orbitals, we just don’t know where they are in the orbital.
The drop of an electron from a high energy level to the ground state in a hydrogen atom would be most closely associated with?
High frequency radiation
