Electronics Flashcards
What is a conductor and give an example?
Conductors allow electricty to flow through them
Aluminium/water/steel/gold
What is an insulator and give an example
Insulators do not allow electricity to flow through them
Polystryene/wood/glass/rubber
What is voltage and what is it measured in?
The force that drives the electrical current around the circuit.
Measured in volts
What is current and what is it measured in?
Current is the electircity flowing through a circuit.
Measured in amps
What does a resistor do?
Resists and directs the flow of electricity.
What are resistors used for?
To protect components form being damaged
What are the two types of resistors?
Fixed and variable
What is resistance measured in?
Ohms
What do the resistance bands tell us
Value of the resistor
First two bands are the numbers
Third band - number of zeros
forth band - tolerance band
What is a LED?
Light Emitting Diode
A component that glows when current is passed through it.
Why should a LED not be connected directly to a battery?
It will damage the LED as the current will be too big
What must be used to reduce the current going to a LED
A resistor
Do LEDs work both ways?
No they will only work one way around.
How do you tell the negative side of a LED
It is the pin nearest the flat part on the base
Name 5 examples that use LEDs
Phone - camera flash
TV remote - to send signals
Monitor power button - to show power status
X-box controller - to show status
Smoke alarm - to show alarm is active
