Electronic Structure Matter Flashcards
the basic unit of an element, with a nucleus, made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
atom
negatively charged subatomic particle around the nucleus; dictates bonding properties
electron
the simplest form of a substance that cannot be broken down into smaller units by chemical means; identified by a number of protons
element
substances of two or more atoms of similar or different elements bonded chemically
compounds
force arising from the interaction between electrons that ties atoms together
organic compounds
compounds that are largely composed: carbon-carbon-hydrogen-carbon along with other mostly nonmetal heteroatoms such as O, N, P, and S
chemical bond
the simplest positive integer ratio of atoms present in a compound; does not necessarily reflect the absolute number of atoms each element in the compound
empirical formula
representation of a compound showing each element’s chemical symbol and the exact numbers of atoms of each of these elements as subscripts
molecular formula
