Electronic Structure 2 Flashcards
What is a Proton?
A neutrally charged subatomic particle found in the nucleus.
What is a Neutron?
A negatively charged subatomic particle found orbiting the nucleus.
What is an Electron?
An energy level occupied by electrons.
What is a Shell?
A subshell within an energy level that can only hold two electrons.
What is an Orbital?
The arrangement of electrons in an atom or in a molecule.
What is Electron configuration?
The method for filling electron shells. Lowest energy shells are filled first, and all orbitals are singly occupied before electrons are paired up.
What is the Aufbau principle?
Region of an electron shell which contains all the orbitals of one type.
What is a Subshell?
The distribution of electrons.
What is Electronic structure?
Property of electrons which affects how they pair up.
What is Spin?
The small, positively charged region at the centre of an atom, containing the protons and neutrons.
What is a Nucleus?
The region in the nucleus, surrounded by defined electron shells.
What is the Bohr model?
A model that describes the structure of an atom.
