This is the symbol for an earthing point in a circuit. What is an earth?

It is a connection to the ground or earth in a circuit. This can be for several reasons such as to protect the user if the circuit insulation failed.

Name the symbol

Name the component

Potentiometer with moveable contact

This is a potentiometer. What does it do?

A potentiometer is a 3 terminal resistor. If only 2 terminals are used it acts as a variable resistor. If all 3 are used it acts as a voltage divider. It is often used as a volume control. Also known as a pot.

This is a resistor. What does it do?

A resistor can be used to control the amount of current in a circuit or to protect other components.

Name the component

Switch

Name the component.

A thyristor.

This is a thyristor. What does it do in a circuit?

A thyristor is like a transistor. When a small current passes through the gate leg, it allows a larger current to flow from the anode to the cathode leg. This continues after the current into the gate has stopped. It is used in latching circuits.

Name the component

Voltmeter

This is a switch (latching). What does it do?

A latching switch can be used to turn a circuit on. It stays on until turned off.

Name the component.

Push to make switch

This is a push to make switch. What does it do?

A push to make switch can be used to turn the circuit on or as a contact sensor. It only stays on whilst pressed.

This is a diode. What does it do?

A diode only allows electricity to flow in one direction. It can be used to protect components.

Name the component.
