ELectronic Abbreviations Flashcards
R
Resistor- Anything that impedes the flow of electricity through a circuit. When energy meets a resistor, the electric energy is often converted to another type of energy such as light or heat.
C
Capacitor- A device capable of storing an electric charge temporarily. Can release charge almost immediately. Capacitor’s ability to store a charge is measured in farads (F). One farad is 1 coulomb of charge at 1 volt.
D
Diode- A device used to keep current flowing in one direction. Usually made from a semiconductor material.
Q
Transistor- A device that can adjust the flow of current. Made of semiconductor material & can amplify a current, detect a current, or impede the flow of current.
S
Switch- Used to turn on/off by closing a connection in a circuit (allowing current through and turning the device on) or opening the connection (and stopping the movement of current, thereby turning the device off)
L
Inductor- metal coil that contains electric potential. Current passing through the wire creates a magnetic field that produces current in a conductor, without the inductor and the conductor having to to touch.
U/ IC
Integrated Circuit- A collection of circuits on a chip made of semiconductor material. The conducting lines in an integrated circuit can be measured in nanometers.
