electronegativity & polarity Flashcards
electronegativity
a measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons
what happens if two atoms of equal electronegativity bond together
they will have the same tendency to attract a bonding pair of electrons, so they will be found on average half way between the two atoms
what if one atom is slightly more electronegative than the other
the atom that is more electronegative will attract the electron pair more than the atom that is less. therefore, the atom with more electronegativity will have a slight negative charge while the other atom will have a slight positive charge.
polar bond
a covalent bond in which there is a separation of charge
what if one atom is a lot more electronegative than the other
the electron pair will gain control of the electrons
what bond does atoms with the same electronegativity form
non polar covalent
what bond do atoms with a slight electronegativity difference form
polar covalent
what bond does atoms with a large electronegativity difference form
ionic
dipole
the separation of charges in a polar bond
