Electronegativity and the Polarity of and Ionic and Covalent Bonds Flashcards
What is electronegativity?
A measure of the ability of bonding atoms to attract electrons
Why do noble gases have a electronegativity of 0?
They have full valence shells so they are not involved in chemical bonding
The larger the number?
The stronger the atom attracts the electrons of a bond
What is a non-polar covalent bond?
The electronegativity difference is zero, therefore electrons are shared equally between the two atoms
What is a polar covalent bond?
When a electronegativity difference exists between atoms and electrons, which therefore shared unequally
In a water molecule, oxygen is more _________________
Electronegative than hydrogen
What does it mean when an electron pair is shared unequally?
The atom that attracts them more strongly has a partial negative charge and other side has a partial positive charge
What is electronegativity difference?
difference in electronegativity between 2 atoms involved in a bond
what bond is if electronegativity difference is 0 - 1.7?
Covalent Bond
What bond is if electronegativity difference is greater than 1.7?
Ionic bond
A higher electronegativity difference before reaching 1.7 is?
Increasing polar covalent
