electronegativity Flashcards
definition of electronegativity
The ability to attract electrons density from a covalent bond
what determines how electronegative an element is
the closer it is to fluorine the more lelectronegative an element is
what are the 3 types of intermolecular forces
hydrogen Bonding, van da waals and dipole dipole
What is van da waal
its when there is a temporary dipole dipole moment: since the electrons are constantly moving it causes it to be partially charged attracting oppositely charged ions
what is hydrogen bonding
same as dipole dipole however only occurs when hydrogen is attached to an oxygen fluorine and nitrogen
what effects the size of a van da waals charge
the size of the compound: the bigger the compound the bigger the temporary charge
how do you draw hydrogen bonging diagram?
- must all have charges
- hydrogen must be bonded to the lone pair
- must be aligned
