Electronagnetic Waves Flashcards
All the EM waves are
transverse
all the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum travel at the
same speed in a vacuum
who was infrared radiation discovered by
Herschel in 1800
what happens when light goes through a prism
creates a spectrum of colours
who discovered the ultraviolet radiation
Ritter in 1801
what EM radiations can be harmful to people
micro waves, infrared, ultra violet and gamma/X-rays
how are micro waves harmful to people
can hear human body cells, and mobile phones use microwaves and can be dangerous when the phones held close to the brain, can be links with brain tumours
how does infrared be harmful to people
if the human body is exposed to too much infrared radiation then it can cause nasty skin burns
how can ultraviolet be harmful to people
sunburns, when surface skin cells have been damaged by absorbing the ultraviolet rays from sunlight, can cause cell mutation, skin cancer and eye damage
how can gamma/x-rays be harmful to people
cell mutation or destruction, leading to tissue damage or cancer
how many groups is the EM spectrum split into and what are they
seven groups- radio waves, micro waves, infra red, visible light, ultra violet, X-rays, gamma rays
