Electron Theory Flashcards
What are the three main parts of an atom?
Proton
Neutron
Electron
What is in the nucleus?
Protons and Neutrons
What charges do the internal particles of a nucleus hold?
Neutron-neutral
Proton-positive
What is an electron?
A subatomic particle that has a negative charge of -0.1602x10^-18. It also orbits the nucleus in energy levels.
What shell has 18 electrons?
3
n=3
2n^2 = 2x3^2 = 18
What is a positively charged ion?
Cation
The flow of electrons, is what?
Current
What is a negatively charged ion?
Anion
What is a molecule?
It is a particle which consists of two or more atoms chemically joined together.
What is a compound?
Is two or more different atoms chemically joined together
What are the 4 types of compounds and how are they held together?
- molecules held together by covalent bonds
- ionic compounds held together by ionic bonds
- intermetallic compounds held together by metallic bonds
- certain complexes held together by coordinate covalent bonds
What are conductors?
Materials that allow flow of electrons easily and they must have less than 4 electrons in the valence shell?
What happens to an atom which loses an electron?
It becomes positive
What happens to an atom when it gains an electron?
It becomes negative
