Electron Theory Flashcards
What is a conductor
A conductor will conduct electricity through a circuit. They have a lattice structure with free electrons, has fewer than 4 electrons in its valence shell.
What is a semi conductor
A semi conductor is something that will conduct electricity depending on external characteristics, will have 4 electrons in outer shell.
What is a insulator
An insulator is something that will not conduct electricity unless exposed to high voltages.
Has more than 4 electrons
What is a coulomb
What is 1 coulomb in electron terms
Measurement of charge
6.24 x 10^18 electrons
What is current
What is the measurement of current
The flow rate of electrons
Measured in Amperes (I or A)
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is where the two atoms will share their electrons to bond eg. Double bond covalent would be oxygen (O2)
What is an ionic bond?
An ionic bond is a negative atom and a positive ion coming together to form a compound eg. Salt (Na+Cl-)
What is a cathode and an anode?
Cathode is negative
Anode is the positive
What is a cation and an anion?
Cation is the positive
Anion is the negative
What is an example of a good conductor
Gold, Silver, Copper
What is a good example of a semiconductor
Carbon, Silicon or Germanium
Good example of an insulator
Mica, Porcelain or Rubber
What is doping a semi conductor?
This makes a semi conductor more conductive by adding another element which will allow them to conduct
