Electron Structure Flashcards
Define the term ‘electron configuration’
The arrangement of electrons in an atom
Define the term ‘electron shielding’
The repulsion between electrons in different inner shells
Define the term ‘atomic orbital’
A region of space around the nucleus of an atom which holds up to two electrons with opposite spins (s, p, d and f)
Define the term ‘sub-shell’
A group of the same type of atomic orbital (s, p, d, f)
How many s-orbitals and electrons do s sub-shells contain?
-One s-orbital
-2 electrons
How many p-orbitals and electrons do p sub-shells contain?
-Three p-orbitals
-6 electrons
How many d-orbitals and electrons do d sub-shells contain?
-Five d orbitals
-10 electrons
How many f-orbitals and electrons do f sub-shells contain?
-Seven f orbitals
-14 electrons
